How Kate Erickson Turns Content And Community Into Cash

Kate is the content and community manager of Entrepreneur on Fire, a hugely popular daily podcast hosted by John Lee Dumas.  Entrepreneur on Fire is more than a podcast: it’s a course that teaches thousands of people around the world how to create, grow and monetize their own podcasts.

Kate hosts another podcast as well, Kate’s Take: The EntrepreneurOnFire Audio Blog, where she shares advice on what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur.

Kate recently launched The Fire Path Project, an online course that helps entrepreneurs with their journey toward building a business. You can read her book by the same title, available on Amazon. And she offers a free series on her podcast, in which he delves into the various stages of The Fire Path Project.

Since John and Kate publish a monthly income report on their website, there’s no mystery surrounding the financial impact they are having with their business. In 2014, they earned nearly $2.8 million in gross sales. Clearly, they are doing something right when it comes to leveraging content and community into a thriving, cash-flow positive business.

Highlights and Take-Aways

  • Kate derives a lot of inspiration for new content from the communities that she manages. By listening to the struggles that people are having, and through the questions they ask, she is able to find an inexhaustible supply of ideas for new content.
  • Written content is what has helped Kate and John gain authority, credibility, and be seen as thought leaders in their industry
  • Kate themes her days to maximize productivity. Monday’s are her writing days, for instance, and by focusing on creating new content, she can write for hours on end.
  • Kate’s discovery of the power of repurposing existing content and publishing through other mediums such as podcasts has fueled her content creation and business growth.
  • Becoming a writer starts with changing your mindset. Kate credits the book by Jeff Goins, You Are A Writer (So Start Acting Like One), with inspiring her to become the writer she’s always wanted to be.
  • The power of podcasts as a content delivery medium and why they are set to explode in growth this year and beyond.
  • How her new Fire Path course can help entrepreneurs turn their ideas into a successful business.

Snippets from the conversation

Finding inspiration and content ideas from your audience

“Every one of the emails to me is a piece of content, because knowing that’s what our audience is looking for, that’s the best content I can provide. Instead of just replying to somebody’s email and giving them an answer, why not create a blog post out of it, or an email opt-in give-away so that I can share that content with a much wider audience.”

The value of written content in establishing authority

“Our written content is what has helped us gain authority, credibility, be seen as thought leaders in our industry, ad provide free value to our audience. All of those things are what have helped us build an actual audience, and if we didn’t have an audience to sell to, then we wouldn’t be able to create the products and services that we have.”

The value of repurposing content

“Discovering the value of repurposing existing content has really opened my eyes up to a whole new opportunity out there, to reach people through different mediums and through different channels.”

On becoming a writer

“I read a book by Jeff Goins, You Are A Writer (So Start Acting Like One). I read that book and I was just so moved and inspired by it, that I’m like, “this guy’s right”  I am a writer, I just have to start acting like one. Anyone can say they’re a writer, but unless you actually sit down and write, you’re not a writer.”
